Game #54: Nats vs. Mets
Game 2 of 3: Wednesday, June 6, 7:05 EDT, Nationals Park
Last night was a long and wild evening in which both teams used every man in their bullpen, the Mets used every bench bat they had and the Nats eventually won, after three comebacks, on a Bryce Harper walkoff single. Both teams will be looking for deep outings from their starters tonight as the Nats send Edwin Jackson (1-3, 3.17 ERA) to face Mets rookie Jeremy Hefner (1-2, 5.60 ERA).
Over his last seven starts Jackson has been extremely good, posting a 2.72 ERA and a K:BB of 2.75:1. The only downside is he's come out of that stretch with an 0-2 record and the team was 1-6 during those starts. A victim of two straight walkoff HR's given up by the bullpen and now three straight starts where he only garnered a total of two runs of run support combined, Jackson is due for some good fortune. Against current Mets Jackson has been pretty good, they don't hit for average or get on base much against him, but when they do hit him it's hard. The team as a whole has a .421 Slugging % against him which, to put it in perspective would put them at 8th in the MLB if they hit like that all the time (They're currently in 17th, one spot ahead of the Nats).
Edwin Jackson vs. Current Mets
There's not a whole lot to say about Jeremy Hefner, he's a rookie who has made two starts in his Major League career. The first he got lit up by the Padres giving up six runs in 3.2 innings and in the most recent one he held the Phillies to three runs over 6.0 innings. His K:BB is currently 12:1, but him being smacked around would play into that and he was a 2.8:1 guy in the minors, so look for that to work itself out. This is his first start against the Nats and no current Nats have faced him.
Lineup Notes: Same lineup as yesterday. I am a little surprised that after the long game, and the fact that the Nats are currently carrying three catchers, that Flores got the start tonight. But to be honest, I'd much rather have him in the game over any of our other options.
